I've recently decided that university is no longer for me after completing a year of a mathematics degree and wanted to do an ACCA. One of my reasons why i no longer want to attend university is because of the financial constraints. What i want advice on is what would be the cheapest way to complete an ACCA. I'm finding it impossible to get a job in Brighton as i don't have any accounting qualifications of experience. So i was wondering if it was possible to do an ACCA via self study if i can buy the books for part 1 and get a temping job in the mean time as i think that once i have completed part 1 i'd find it easier to get a job.
Any suggestions on what i should do i would really appreciate it.
Thanx

First i would like to ask why are you leaving math?
Lot of students complete pass all ACCA papers with only self study. In my opinion its bit tough job to rely on only self studying without doing job/internship in accounts field.

if i go with the self study method how do i arrange when to take exams? and do i do this with ACCA directly? i understand that i need to become a member first which costs approx £60

Self study a god option but very difficult for ACCA espacially in skills module previously part 2. Acca is highly technical nature profession and i think it's difficult to pass at your own.But after all it's your courage and your struggle which will climbed you towards success

Hi
Self study is possible - so far I have taken papers 1.1-2.4 and passed them all first time. You just need to be dedicated to put in the hours. I won't say it isn't hard to do it this way though. It depends how you learn best.
As for arranging exams - ACCA sends you the forms automatically and sorts it out you don't have to "arrange it". You choose which exam centre from a list is nearest to you.

Hi Sherry,
Sounds like you're in a true dilemna. Funds limited, therefore, you need to make the most best use of them. Not a nice place to be in.
When you say Brighton, I'm assuming this is Brighton, U.K. Right?
Regarding self study. Don't mean to put you off. I started off with self study. Gave up as I couldn't cope. Never done accountancy before. So I attended courses. For some people, it does work. But as others have stated already, self study requires a lot of discipline.
In my experience, if you don't have any previous accounting work experience, most employers will not give you a chance. As soon as you complete Part I (1.1, 1.2 and 1.3), you will find that you will demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm to prospective employers. I highly recommend you pursue at least Part I studies independantly, either through self study or attending courses. Good luck in your decision.
